Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system caused widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, mudslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of millions of people nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams recorded floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and residences washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual who died when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon early Monday as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

According to meteorological authorities, its maximum winds dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing were halted on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists have found that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms cause an average of US$3.5 million in damage to the country every year.

The nation’s leader declared a state of emergency last week because of the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
