The speculation around this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The secret has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is creating a completely new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer packed with intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio clarified that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.
Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This choice of words hints that the team could be building a real-time experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it sparked the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, player agency, and flexible progression—qualities that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs that are viable by choosing a distinct build with a unique decision path.
The series is also famously permissive, enabling players to improvise both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be approached in multiple ways, frequently in unexpected fashion.
- You might find an answer because you heeded something a dog told you.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.
The Journey Continues
It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, players can anticipate a new entry in this legendary franchise.
