The UK and US have signed a landmark trade agreement that will keep no duties on British drug products being sold in the US market.

Agreement Details of the Accord

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has agreed to increase expenditure on pharmaceuticals through the public health system. This move secures that import taxes on these vital products will remain at zero for a timeframe of three years.

This deal is in response to recent threats to significantly raise tariffs on patented drug imports, with figures mentioned up to one hundred percent.

"This arrangement between the United Kingdom bolsters the worldwide climate for cutting-edge drugs and introduces long-overdue balance to American-British pharmaceutical trade," a statement declared.

Commercial Impact

Drugs constitute one of the UK's most significant exports to the America, which is clearly the largest buyer for major British pharmaceutical firms.

Trade data show that in the one-year period prior to September, the UK sold pharmaceutical products valued at billions to the US. This value accounted for a significant portion of British export trade in that span.

"This deal secures jobs, boosts investment and sets the stage for the UK to emerge as a worldwide center for biotech and pharma," the Business and Trade Secretary stated.

Key UK Commitments

The deal entails several specific pledges from the British government:

  • Higher Cost Ceiling: The UK will increase the affordability limit at which it deems new medicines to be unaffordable by 25%.
  • Increased NHS Spending: There is a goal to raise total health service expenditure on drugs from 0.3 percent of Gross Domestic Product to 0.6 percent over the coming ten years.
  • Rebate Cap: The percentage drug companies must refund to the NHS to prevent overspending will be limited at 15%. In the past, repayments topped 20%.

Broader Context

The deal comes amid a ongoing row between the pharmaceutical industry and the British authorities over drug pricing and regulatory access.

The disagreement were intensified by arguments that US consumers were paying several times more for the equivalent treatments than patients in the other developed nations.

In recent months, several significant drug company projects in the UK have been delayed or abandoned, while substantial expansions have been directed toward US facilities.

The Science Minister acknowledged that the NHS must increase expenditure on medicines, noting that its spending on drugs had shrunk as a share of its total funding over the previous ten-year period.
